Portraiture I

Publicizing a photograph of an unaware subject - even worse of a stranger – is by some considered as offensive, especially if the act serves no artistic or documentary purpose at all. The revealing and distorting nature of a photograph is felt to interfere with the subjects dignity.

A consensual photograph is usually free of such charges, but when preparing the following pictures, it became obvious to me that the consensual photograph is far more revealing and distorting than any other photograph might ever be.

It adds various layers to the picture such as the relationship between the subject and the photographer, the authorship of the subject and the subjectivity of the photographer.

I therefore thank you, Romina, for your trust, creativity and vision you brought to this portraiture session. The process of publicizing our work was truly revealing.
